STREAMLINING MY COLLECTION: THE JOURNEY CONTINUES

This is my most recent take-to-Goodwill pile. The effort to streamline my collection is an ongoing process. This is a combination of films I picked up as blind buys, some from dollar stores, as well as quite a few films I enjoyed once or twice, but probably would never watch again. I'm giving away the Gunsmoke and Rifleman DVDs because I recently bought both shows in complete collections. My bootleg DVD of Looking For Mr. Goodbar was recently replaced with a Blu-ray edition. So, the collection keeps growing even as I try to streamline. The Pink Panther is a movie I saw when it first came to theaters, and I thought it was hilarious at the age of twelve. Now, I don't find it the least bit funny. I still haven't packed these up yet, so I may change my mind about one or two of them. Or ten or fifteen. Or... Oh, what we fanatics go through!!

  1. Had the difficult task of purging the majority of my DVD collection during the pandemic. Regretting some of the stuff I sold or gave away, since they're still not available on Blu-Ray or 4K.

Probably a hot take, but I always felt the one Pink Panther film worth watching more than once was The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1978).

  2. Sorry to hear that you were forced to give up much pf your collection. I'm doing it partly for space considerations, but I also see no reason to hold on to films I probably won't want to see again. I'm pretty sure I saw The Pink Panther Strikes Again, but I don't remember a single thing about it!

  3. It's always tough to wade through a collection to decide what you really can do without. When it comes to movies, it's usually something I upgraded from to an edition in a better format. It's pretty rare that I ditch my only copy of a flick, unless it was just a completely worthless watch the first time around. Good luck making your daunting decisions!

The one Pink Panther flick I recall seeing was 1978's REVENGE OF THE PINK PANTHER, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Remember the Silver Hornet? I was crying at that ridiculous bit.

    1. The more I take a critical eye to my collection, the easier it gets. There are different reasons why I decide I can do without a movie. Upgrading to a new format is one of them. But it can be a complete loss of interest in the film after a rewatch. Or maybe I enjoy watching something once or twice but don't feel the need to keep it on the shelf. But, yeah, if it was a worthless watch the first time, then it definitely goes to Goodwill! Spartan, in his comment, also mentioned a Pink Panther sequel, albeit a different one. I'm sure I saw the sequels but can't remember anything about them. Maybe I'll catch them again sometime.

  6. A couple of years ago I did a pretty thorough evaluation and cleaning out, which cut the collection down almost by half. Now, for both DVDs and books, I have an informal "steady state" policy, so as things come in, others go out.

I volunteer at my local library processing donations, and recently in talking with some of the younger staff members and volunteers, it's evident that they regard DVDs in the same way as VHS - its hard for them to conceive of anyone still owning a DVD player. So it may not be much longer that thrift stores or libraries will even take DVDs.

My purchasing of individual movie DVDs has declined, but from time to time I consider TV sets. Lately I've been itching to buy the complete Night Gallery, as that doesn't seem to be streaming anywhere.

    1. Thanks for commenting, Brian! I think having a "steady state" policy is a wise idea. I can't say I'm even close to such a policy, but I'm at least getting more sensible about collecting just for the sake of collecting. My attitude about DVDs is regressive, I suppose, because I still see great value in the ones in my collection, many that I've been enjoying for years. As long as they play without any problems, I'll keep them. True, I replace some with Blu-rays, usually for the extra features, but I sometimes keep the DVDs as well simply because I like having them. The Night Gallery box set is definitely worth splurging on!!
